Lucky for me I was born in AMERICA.
In Venezuela, my father's country, a corrupt dictator, Juan Gomez, was
controlling all life. He did not want a public educated beyond
elementary school. To obtain a secondary education, my father's family
had to escape to New York. There my grandmother was able to work with my
father to send him and his two younger brothers to college. Times were
tough, but the lesson learned was: Do not allow a despot or people with
special interests to control our educational system.
I grew up in Rhode Island and graduated
from Rhode Island College of Education. I have taught Math and
Science in schools in Rhode Island, Virginia, and Vermont. Before I
retired, I taught Algebra and Geometry at Champlain Valley Union in
Hinesburg.
My husband Jim and I have four sons:
Michael, Gregory, Andrew, and Tom. They all graduated from Vermont
colleges. We lived in Bedford, Massachusetts for 12 years. We came
to Grand Isle to enjoy summers at Jim's father's camp. Finally we
were able to build our present house and become residents.
My interests include archaeology,
gardening, music, and watching five grandchildren grow up too fast.
I believe that Grand Isle must provide
its children with all the necessary tools and experience to enable them to
do well in their future and enjoy the freedom of choice still offered in
this country. We cannot lose what has been so difficult to obtain.
