MONDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2006-7:00PM   

BOARD ATTENDING:

Herb Durfee, Becky Turner, Ira Trombley, Scott Brown;

OTHERS ATTENDING:

PROCEEDINGS:

HD-CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:02PM

HD-note from Colchester High School;

RT-request for Executive session for a Student Matter;

TW-a Basketball Issue.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

23 October-tabled to next mtg.

 

MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC FOR ITEMS NOT ON AGENDA:

-None Tonight.

 

SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT:

-Letter received from SBHS Principal Patrick Burke on 31 Oct requesting a reschedule of meeting;

HD-notes that there are 2 assistants at SBHS who could have come instead-the SBSB has been notified.

 

7:08PM-HD moves to enter Executive Session for a Student Matter-BT 2nd-GC.

7:18PM-HD moves to exit Executive Session-IT 2nd-GC.

 

HD-has met w/SB Chairs from SBHS, CHS, EHS to establish lines of communication; the following noted re Colchester:

          -would be willing to take GI 8th graders;

          -is in the top 1000 high schools nationwide;

          -is interested in running a bus if ~14-15 students would ride;

          -data on student performance is available.

 

The following info available from South Burlington High School:

          -quarterly & semester grades;

          -current Honor Roll;

          -Failures by Town;

          -Team Rosters;

          -Honor Society Membership;

          -Drama participation;

          -Attendance record for any Islander;

          -Drop-out info: 5 of 22 Islanders have dropped out since 2004;

          -Bus Issues;

          -Test Score Data;

          -NSRE by non-resident town;

Data Sheets have been given to RT.

 

Essex HS Board Chair is out of town-info should be forthcoming.

 

 

 

PRINCIPALS REPORT:

-Emergency Response Team has met-contact numbers & services info exchanged;

 

-2 Grants have been received:

-Wellness-from the Dept of Ed Food Council Committee ~$3000-will provide:

 -Pedometers;

-Survey Monkey;

-Theater performance on nutrition;

 

          -Target Field Trip Grant:

          -Will provide a reverse field trip for ELF;

 

-Youth Risk Behavior Survey will be done at the 8th Grade level & a Clean Team Group at the 6th & 7th Grade levels;

IT-noted to not do the independent survey;

TW-unaware of the independent survey-will follow-up;

IT-it is historic at GIS.

PRINCIPALS REPORT CONTINUED:

BASKETBALL TEAM ISSUE:

TW summarizes situation:

-many more wish to play than expected-cuts have been proposed-better to have

 everyone play who wishes to play-could another coach be hired?

BT-notes that additional refs & transportation might be necessary too; could there be a varsity & a jv team?

TW-it is not ideal to have a 7th & an 8th team;

ST-5/6 is jv-7/8 is varsity;

BG-there were 18 boys the 5/6 team last year;

DT-it is good experience at middle school level;

IT-would a B team have enough opportunity?;

TW-A & B would not be of equal ability;

HD-could there be a travel team & a home team? Could there be an assistant coach?

ST-4 lines for equal playing time?

Noted that “quarters” are 8 minutes long;

HD-the experience is most important;

 Board & TW opt for Full Roster-TW will follow-up to implement.

 

ITEMS OF BOARD DISCUSSION:

HEALTH INSURANCE 2ND READING:

7:52PM-IT moves to adopt-BT 2nd-GC;

 

GISU BUDGET MEETING REPORT:

-Passed at last GISU mtg;

-$987,986;

-GI portion is $466,982/27.55% based on 314.59 ADM-this info will appear in GN binder;

HD-notes that having 3 GISB members at the mtg was a good thing; there was discussion on all Island Communities.

 

BUDGET SEASON:

HD-noted the “Beware Budget Warning” that appeared in The Islander ;

BT-has there been any response to that?

HD-no but it is essential to keep the process open;

IT-GISB should place an ad with the Budget Meeting Schedule;

 

 

GISB Meeting Schedule Discussion:

-27 Nov: Budget Season Strategy Session;

-11 Dec: 1st pass?

-18 Dec: 7:30PM-after the Concert;

-8 Jan: The Warning?

-22 Jan: The Warning?

      

PAYMENT OF BILLS

Noted that tuitions & transportation are included;

8:12PM-BT moves to approve payment in amount of $109,829.11-HD 2nd-GC.

IT-notes that the North Hero School Choice Proposal passed-handout distributed;
