ELF PRESENTATION: BARB & MISSY

PRESENTATION HANDOUT DISTRIBUTED TO BOARD MEMBERS

-Note that this for 06-07 SY;

-2 Program coordinators need+10 parent volunteers.

Ira asked if VINS set the $1100/$2100 funding split-Yes;

Herb asked if this was an annual amount-Yes;

More towns participating lowers the price;

Becky asked if the book was available-yes-Scott had a copy;

 

 

 

 

 

 

ELF PRESENTATION CONTINUED: BARB & MISSY

The VINS program can be adjusted to fit a school;

HD: do older students miss something at start-up?

RT: yes but hard to evaluate empirically;

Barb noted that new parent volunteers are needed each year;

PP: Is the $1100 consistent?-Missy: there has been one increase in 7 years-next year goes up 5%;

Preliminary Application due 15 Jan-Final App due 15 Mar;

BT: how long does a program last? Missy: Can stay a long time in a school;

SB: How are volunteers solicited? Missy: already good response;

HD: What is the teacher response? RT-high level of interest-teachers have been requested to add $200 to their budgets; momentum is developing!

SB: Does the program take place during regular class time? Missy: Yes-1-1.5 hr/mo-coordinated w/classroom teacher;

HD: TYVM for a good presentation; budget process begins next month-stay tuned.

 

 

 

UAPK PRESENTATION-CATHI WIEST:

DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM

-Information file provided w/overview of programs-EEE/EEI;

-GI is only town in county w/o UAPK;

-Brief history discussed;

-Benefits are documented;

-~15 students in GI;

-Medicaid start-up funding available;

 

 

 

 

 

 

UAPK PRESENTATION CONTINUED:

HD: Budget Question;

RT: Slight increase;

CW: Rearrangement of schedule/time/school allocation possible;

BT: How are students evaluated?

CW: Testing/Surveys/Transition Activities w/K teachers; no long-term test results in Vermont but documented in other states;

CW: Would a community Q&A be a good idea?

HD: Yes;

HD: Should this be put in as a Budget Line Item?

RT: Yes-for auditing reasons;

CW: Is there a timeline for Board decision?

PP/BT: Wait for budget;

RT: 3rd week January;

IT: Meeting w/interested parents a good idea;

HD: TYVM-a good presentation.

5TH GRADE ISSUES:

-Size; In middle school?

DOROTHY SACCA PRESENTATION:

-Handout provided;

-Teaching pace has slowed;

-This years 5th grade is making the transition very slowly-not ready;

-Smaller classes better;

-A 5th grade teacher for next year a good idea;

North Hero Tuition Students could leverage another teacher;

Considerable Q&A discussion ensued;

HD: Asked for options/budget concerns; TYVM;

SIDE NOTES:

The Board expresses much appreciation for the 496 lb of food donated to the South Hero Congregational Church Missions Board for the Islands Food Shelf.

8:54PM-Ira moves to adopt the 2nd reading and the adoption of POLICY G-11-hd 2ND-GENCON;

-RT distributed revised page 2.

 

PRINCIPAL SEARCH:

HD: -Process on schedule

-1st Dec Mtg- appointments will be made;

CONTRACT TERMS DISCUSSION ENSUED

-1 year to start/2 year probational;

-# work days discussed;

-#vaca days discussed;

-Salary range discussed-$55-60,000

9:57PM-BT moves to pass payment of $ 27,611.26+$884.29-Ira 2nd- GENCON.

SNELLING GRANT APPLICATION :

-System Changes-"Bottom-Up" philosophy;

-Improve school performance;

RT: This is in place at ILM & NH;

HD: Should we apply?

RT: Yes-Futures;

HD: Can it help w/principal search?

RT: No-but the School Boards Association can provide facilitation-see Winton Goodrich;
